Fire Maple Star x1 with GSI Coffee Rocket
The resulting coffee was good, but not as bold and flavorful as the French Press brew I made in today's earlier video. I'm going to experiment with the grind and quantity of water for an ideal brew. The grounds basket was as full as I could get it, so if the finer grind doesn't produce the desired flavor, I'll try reducing the amount of water.
I was expecting the GSI Coffee Rocket to be less mess and fuss than the French Press attachment, but that was not the case. Using the Coffee Rocket, I was prone to spilling grounds when loading the brew basket. In addition, it was difficult to pour water from the kettle into the brewing funnel, resulting in wasted water. One must be careful to pace f...

First try on Fire Maple Star x1 camp stove & French Press

The end result was a very tasty coffee brew! As the video shows, I learned a few things on this first attempt, like perhaps not turning the gas all the way up before lighting unless it’s windy. Another brand says to light the gas before attaching the pot, which I will try next time. It’s also important to keep a watch on the boiling water so it doesn’t boil over! I was heating about 725ml out o...

Shawnee Mission Park Mountain Bike Ride

I’m new to mountain biking so I’m just trying to figure it all out. Helmet mount GoPro. I had the angle adjusted pretty well at the beginning but then angled it down a little too much starting at 7:30 in so it’s not very pleasant to view. I like the trail. It’s a “green” difficulty level trail and the easiest one at Shawnee Mission Park.

The Razorback trail portion of the ride starts at 16:35. For this 37-mile ride on July 6, 2023, I rented a Marin Presidio 3. It's a very nice bike, with internal 8-speed hub and belt drive. It was supposed to rain the whole time but cleared up just as I was departing and stayed clear where I was riding. My GoPro was set at 4K resolution in linear mode (no fisheye), with image stabilization. Aut...
Another Indian Creek Trail Ride in HR Zone 2

Another slower, enjoyable ride in heart rate zone two, average HR 142. This time I selected "Linear" mode on the GoPro to remove the fisheye effect. Also, a very informal ride with T-shirt, bib shorts, no helmet or gloves, forgot my bell and camera backup battery, and didn't turn on my blinking lights since I was mostly on the trail. More old school like back in the day. Wind reduction was off,...

The beauty of spring in Kansas City, spiced up with a construction detour and the muddy effects of spring rain runoff. All in all, it was good to be out! I think the clicking in my rear wheel may have been a stone in the disc brake. I forgot to switch the camera back to 4K:30fps, so it's in 1080p:60fps.
Trail People

All people are created in God's image, says the Bible (Genesis 1:27). Though this is a concept with deep meaning, it surely means every person has inherent worth, and they are loved by God. Yet, on the trail, these precious people seem more like mere blurs passing by, or obstacles to be avoided. I've often wondered about the "real people" with whom I'm sharing the trail, their lives, and what b...

Hope it looks good!

The day before Easter, 04/08/23, I enjoyed this 30 mile ride experimenting with heart rate "Zone 2," which for me is around 126-144 bpm. It's so hilly around KC it's easier to stay within Zone 2 while on a trail like this, which is kind of flat, since it runs alongside a creek much of the way. So, this was an easy and enjoyable ride. Wow a post from GSI!! I’m looking forward to tweaking my Coffee Rocket recipe. I think it will be good for single brews while camping. I thought of a few hacks, and I’ll do another video. Like, the GSI grounds basket is about the same diameter as my Porlex grinder, so I can grind directly into the GSI basket. Also, pouring from the spoutless kettle I boiled with was a challenge. The FireMaple stove’s French Press lid has a better pouring spout so I can use it or something as a funnel. I’ll grind a little finer to taste as well. If you have any tips let me know! I like how the GSI Coffee Rocket fits inside the GSI Infinity mug and the parts clean off with a squirt from my bike water bottle.

Haha sorry. Unscrew the hex knob the whole way. Feel the loose slack on the rubber strap behind the foot you just unscrewed. Push and wiggle the strap forward toward yourself and you should be able to pop the strap’s rubber endpoint toward you and have it come loose from its retainer track. It’s hard to find the words. I hope that’s clear enough.

In dry weather they’re still great. I’m still on my first set of LightBicycle pads. Looks like these wheels will last a good long time. They’re still true. In a hard rain they’re scary though due to almost nonexistent stopping power. There’s just very little friction when the surface is soaked. I don’t generally ride in the rain, but I got caught out once or twice. I’m still glad I got them.

What an epic race and finale. I know ifs mean nothing, but for Delgado to start 2:48 behind was a gift to LeMond and Fignon. Can't imagine how it would have turned out if he started on level terms.
